W.I. Stoneberger - Ghosts

Some belong to places
others to people
but all have their reasons
for being there
for not staying put
for affecting the air.

Some people carry them
in their pockets
or perched in the branches
of their brains.

Shake the tree
but they cling like leaves
clutching the heartstrings
invading the dreams.

They exist everywhere.

Everyone's head holds
at least one or two
and room enough
for more to move into.

They claim their spaces
before they even die
choose their haunts
choose the lives that they
will attach to
choose what they will keep
and what they will lose.

Some belong to you.
