VW Dieselgate Trial Begins
Description
Four former employees of automaker Volkswagen ($VWAGY@Germany) went on trial Thursday. The trial stems from the “Dieselgate” scandal that tarnished the conglomerate's reputation and led to nearly $38 billion in losses. While VW admitted in 2015 that it cheated U.S. emissions tests, these four employees are accused of fraud—using illegal software to increase their bonuses by skirting air quality regulations. For their part, the former employees claim they didn’t know or informed their superiors of the scheme. VW stock hovered around $33 in premarket trading.
