STORY: Indonesia's Mt Sinabung continued to spew volcanic material on Saturday forcing an increasing number of local residents to seek shelter away from their houses and farms.
Mt Sinabung, the highest volcano in north Sumatra province was put on high alert in November after its volcanic activity increased significantly.
On Saturday volcanic clouds from Sinabung traveled more than two kilometers away, approaching residential areas, according to a volcanologist.
The government raised the volcano's status on November 24 after observing increased activity.
The local government and the National Disaster Management Agency say they have prepared for the worst case scenario and have tried to increase shelters to accommodate the growing number of evacuees.
Sinabung is one of nearly 130 active volcanoes in the world's fourth-most populated country, which straddles the "Pacific Ring of Fire".
