Describing his aesthetics as “visual ecstasy with a darker message,” Ron English is the latest artist to front our ongoing Pen & Paper series. Taking to English’s New York studio, we get a closer look at the workplace of the prolific artist who’s made a career bombing the global landscape with bold iterations to pop culture’s most recognizable faces. Tinged with satirical messages, his mash-up of high and low iconography dubbed POPaganda can be found in various mediums — from murals, prints to sculptures. His resume includes works with music icons like The Dandy Warhols and Chris Brown along with myraid of vinyl toy releases from Made by Monsters, just to name a few. In this clip, English speaks on where he draws inspiration from, whether its politics or simply run-of-the-mill experiences like shopping at the supermarket. We also learn more about English’s streetwear label and how he looks to use it as a vehicle to interact with youth culture.
