ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION

Typhoon Rammasun triggered landslides and flooding in Vietnam that killed 12 people and left four others missing, local media reported on Monday (July 21).

In Lang Son province near the border with China, residents from about 2,000 houses had to be evacuated due to the threat of flooding after the typhoon.

Officials said it might take days before these evacuees can return to their homes, VTV reported.

In Ha Giang province, residents were seen cleaning up after flooding and landslides hit.

Rammasun, which means "thunder god" in Thai, pounded the Philippines last week, claiming the lives of at least 77 people, before hitting China and Vietnam over the weekend.

Seventeen people have been reported killed in southern China by the typhoon, according to state media.

Typhoons are common in the South China Sea region and usually pick up strength over warm waters before hitting land.
