Using various colors in cell formatting - Excel Tips and Tricks
17 Views • Sep 30, 2025
Description
I recently published a video on calculating days left from the deadline, along with color-coding and flagging for overdue dates.
The color-coding can be customized in the cell formatting popup window like this.
However, there was a very interesting question about the possibility of using colors beyond the three options: Red, Blue, and Green.
Well, we have a few moe options for colours, and this is how you can define it.
The first method is to use the standard colour names as shown in the screen, with a total of 8 options available.
If I have missed out other colors, please do let me know.
The second option involves utilizing color index or color palettes. By typing the word "color" followed by a number, you have access to a range of 56 different colors to choose from.
I've consolidated all the colour I have outlined in my video on this spreadsheet and this is what it each of the color looks like.
Here are the colours outlined in my video.
Standard Color Names
Black
Blue
Cyan
Green
Magenta
Red
White
Yellow
With this method, the syntax would look like this.
[Magenta]# "Days Overdue";[Blue]# "Days Remaining";[Green] "Today"
Method 2:
Color Palette
Syntax.
Color>
For example.
Color8
Color42
You have a selectin of Color1 to Color56
And the syntax would look like this.
[Color56]# "Days Overdue";[Blue]# "Days Remaining";[Green] "Today"
What are the names of the colors in Excel?
Black: RGB(0,0,0)
White: RGB(255,255,255)
Red: RGB(255,0,0)
Green: RGB(0,255,0)
Blue: RGB(0,0,255)
Yellow: RGB(255,255,0)
Magenta: RGB(255,0,255)
Cyan: RGB(0,255,255)
