Description

Supporters of Egypt's ousted president packed the area around the Rabaa Adawiya mosque in Cairo in their thousands as they waited for sunset to break their Ramadan fast.

They're keeping up this mass vigil to demand the reinstatement of Mohamed Mursi.

Mursi's been in detention since he was toppled by the army.

On Friday the U.S. State Department said it agreed with Germany that Mursi should be freed and criticised the arrest of some of his Muslim Brotherhood backers.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) JEN PSAKI, STATE DEPARTMENT SPOKESPERSON, SAYING:

"We still continue to view these as politically motivated arrests and still continue to believe that they should be released. (REPORTER QUESTION: 'They call for the release of Mohamed Mursi. Do you concur or are you likely to do the same thing any time soon? You do agree that he should be released?) "We do agree."

In Tahrir Square where Mursi's opponents welcome his departure such opinions were firmly rejected.
