US mechanical engineering student creates impressive flame-resistant material from simple ingredients

A mechanical engineering student from Maine, US created his own flame-resistant material from multiple household products.
Footage from August 2 shows Zachary Hatch demonstrating the qualities of the material that he made from flour, borax, sugar, water, baking soda, chalk and corn starch.
Inspired by a material called Starlite, Hatch decided to make his own version as the recipe is kept under wraps.
Hatch explained: "I’m in school for mechanical engineering technology and I’ve taken some chemistry classes because I really like chemistry.
"I made the substance using extremely simple ingredients.
"This is why I think the original person (the Starlite guy) kept it super secret.
"The formula is just my own ratio of flour, borax, sugar, water, baking soda, chalk and corn starch.
"This is a very simple thing to make on a base level, but other things can be added or swapped in the mixture to achieve different effects.
"I would describe myself as a knowledgeable home scientist. Most people can make this, but not many can do so safely."
