August 4, 1790 -
US Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton urged the Congress that ten boats for the collection of revenue be built. This was to stop smuggling, especially of coffee, which was hampering trade. Congress passed the Tariff Act on this date, establishing the beginnings of the US Coast Guard.
