US-China trade talks resume

The United States and China opened a round of high-level trade talks in Washington on  January 30, 2019, for the second time since the nations called a truce in their trade war. Priorities for the talks include protection of US intellectual property, the forced transfer of US technology through joint ventures and enforcement mechanisms.
But the negotiations took place under the shadow of escalating tension related to US moves to extradite Chinese telecoms giant Huawei’s executive Meng Wanzhou. She is charged with violating US sanctions on Iran, but Beijing says her case is politically motivated. At the same time, FBI chiefs issued a warning about China’s counterintelligence threat.
The US and China agreed in December 2018 to a 90-day truce in their trade war, and face a March 1 deadline to reach a deal. Washington has threatened to increase US tariffs on Chinese goods if there is no agreement.
