UPS Faces Historic Strike
Description
Contract negotiations between United Parcel Service (UPS) and the Teamsters union, covering approximately 340,000 UPS workers, are ongoing, with the current agreement expiring on July 31. The possibility of a strike looms if an agreement is not reached, which could have notable repercussions on the U.S. economy. A potential strike by UPS Teamsters could become the largest in U.S. history against a single employer. While a strike would have adverse effects on the economy due to delayed shipments and deliveries, reaching a deal with the union could also impact UPS' finances, considering the company's record profits in 2022 and the projected slower growth in 2023 with a significant drop in first-quarter profit compared to the previous year. According to an analysis by the Anderson Economic Group, a strike by UPS Teamsters could be the most expensive in the U.S. in at least a century, with estimated economic losses exceeding $7 billion, including customer losses and lost wages.
