Delhi, officially the National Capital Territory (NCT) that includes the Indian capital New Delhi, stands on the Yamuna River in northern India. According to Govt. of India website www.censusindia.gov.in, the total population of Delhi is 12,877,470. Metropoliton region of Delhi has a population of around 16.3 million. It is the second most populous metropolis in India after Mumbai. With a population of 16.3 million in 2011, the city is also the eighth most populous metropolis in the world. The NCT and its urban region have been given the special status of National Capital Region (NCR) under the Constitution of India's 69th amendment act of 1991. The NCR includes the neighbouring districts of Baghpat, Gurgaon, Sonepat, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Noida, Greater Noida, Jhajjar, Panipat, Rewari, Alwar, Meerut and other nearby districts as defined by the government, and has nearly 22.2 million residents. NCR has a total area of 33,578 square kilometers.
