Uganda on alert after US warning

Uganda troops patrol the streets of Kampala.

They've been deployed to crowded areas of the capital and the main airport.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) UGANDAN POLICE COUNTER TERRORISM SQUAD COMMANDER, DAVID WAISWA, SAYING:

"Now we specifically chose areas that are first so vulnerable and also, keeping in mind the previous attacks that have been taking place in the region, the areas that they have been targeting. So you realise that the transport industry and markets, places and those busy, busy areas have been a big, big target and they are always targets and that is why we chose those areas where we have been."

Security's been stepped up since the U.S. has warned of a "specific threat" to its Entebbe International Airport.

The U.S. embassy warned of a threat between nine and 11 pm local time on Thursday but no incidents were reported.

Uganda is no stranger to militant attacks.

Many of the assaults have been blamed on Somalia's Al Shabaab.
