U.S. fugitive arrested after 41 years
Description
An ordinary house in an ordinary neighborhood near Lisbon, Portugal -- now believed to be one of the homes of a convicted murderer and suspected hijacker on the run from from authorities for 41 years.
Residents of Colares woke up to headlines reporting that 68-year-old fugitive George Wright had been arrested in the town by Portuguese authorities two days earlier.
Wednesday morning, some locals said Wright had gone by the name Jorge and lived in the area for at least 20 years.
One resident said he had married a Portuguese woman and ran an artifact store.
SOUNDBITE:Cara de Anjo, Colares Resident:
"This man was nice, easy going; he had good contacts here in the community. He also had a business near the beach of Macas. He lived alongside everyone else, no one would have thought that he is the suspect they say he is."
Serving a 15 - 30 year sentence for the murder of a gas station owner, Wright had escaped from a New Jersey state prison in 1970.
Wright then was among 5 hijackers who allegedly commandeered a jetliner en route to Miami.
After demanding one million dollars in ransom to free the passengers, the plane was forced to Algeria - where the hijackers were released.
The four other hijackers were apprehended in France - but until Monday, Wright had remained at large.
Wright faces extradition to the United States to serve the remainder of his sentence for murder.
It is unclear whether he will face additional charges for his role in the hijacking.
