ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)
STORY: Typhoon Bopha made landfall in southern Philippines early Tuesday (December 4), bringing heavy rains and strong winds and sending 41,600 people living in coastal areas to flee their homes.
Packing winds of 175 kph (108 mph) and gusts of up to 210 kph (130 mph), Bopha is the strongest cyclone to hit the Philippines this year, making landfall over the agricultural and mining province of Davao Oriental in the Mindanao region.
The typhoon affected livelihood in the coastal province of Surigao del Sur, where strong winds tore apart a roof in a local market. Stalls emptied out as heavy rains slammed the province.
Weather bureau Pagasa said Bopha weakened when it hit land, moving northwest with a speed of 20 kph (12 mph).
Disaster authorities banned small fishermen from going to sea, closed schools and suspended small-scale mining operations.
About 20 typhoons hit the Philippines every year, often causing death and destruction.
