Description
Officials here tonight are warning of the possibility of immense damage as Typhoon Bavi fast approaches the Korean Peninsula.
It's already lashed the southern island Jeju flooding roads and toppling trees.
Packed with bands of rain and gusty winds, the typhoon is expected to reach the capital area tomorrow morning.
We have a team coverage tonight: Min Suk-hyen reports.
Typhoon Bavi, with a maximum wind speed of 160 kilometers per hour, is moving north off the western coast of the Korean Peninsula.
It's already lashed South Korea's southern resort island of Jeju, flooding roads, toppling trees, ripping off signboards and knocking down traffic signs. But, there were no immediate reports of casualties.
"Since yesterday, at evening 8 PM, we’re not allowed to go outside, so resident student are staying in the residence. We’re not allowed to go outside because of the safety reasons. Right now rain now has stopped but still windy outside."
Due to the winds and rough seas, flights and ferries are not running between Jeju and the mainland.
Around 3-hundred-30 flights and almost 2,000 ferries have been canceled ... and about 80 schools in Jeollanam-do Province have switched to remote learning.
A resident of Jeolla-do Province says she can feel the wind is strong strong enough to topple trees, bring down signboards... and make it hard for people to walk.
“The wind is too strong right now to go outside and assess the damage. I just hope that everyone gets through this typhoon safely.”
The weather agency is advising people who are under the direct influence of the storm to take precautions for their safety and to prevent property damage.
