Twisters strike Midwestern U.S.
Description
Around 250 people live here in Thurman, Iowa.
A violent storm hit the small town in the US Midwest on Saturday, leaving most homes without power and forcing some residents to spend the night in local shelters.
Kyle Taylor got home just before the storm hit.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) RESIDENT KYLE TAYLOR SAYING:
"It started raining like crazy and a tree limb was spinning around. I ran into the bathroom and then it was all over with, pretty much."
Mike Clark said he was asleep when an emergency siren woke him up.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) RESIDENT MIKE CLARK SAYING:
"It just hit real fast and I got here and the transformer blew."
A number of tornadoes also touched down in Oklahoma, as residents braced for life-threatening nighttime twisters.
Severe thunderstorms were expected throughout Oklahoma, Nebraska and Kansas, and the National Weather Service said storms were possible from Texas to South Dakota.
Officials said the worst conditions were expected to hit late on Saturday, and warned that some areas could see baseball-sized hail and very strong winds.
No injuries or deaths had been reported.
