Turkey considering "buffer zone" along Syria border
Description
Relentless violence in Syria.
Amateur video out of Syria which could not be independently verified by Reuters shows another week of war and destruction.
As civilians flee the violence, many have sought refuge in Turkey.
So far some 15,000 Syrians have fled to Turkey, including 1,000 in the space of 24 hours on Thursday.
Now Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's is suggesting a humanitarian "buffer zone" for refugees.
(SOUNDBITE) (Turkish) TURKISH PRIME MINISTER TAYYIP ERDOGAN SAYING:
"About the subject, all of the options are being studied including a buffer zone and a security zone. All of these options are included in this study because it would be wrong to liaise on this subject from one point. We are discussing it by evaluating various alternatives"
Analysts say that move in Syria could prove a turning point in the conflict, opening the door to foreign intervention in the year-old uprising. While the stated intention of any troop deployment would be to protect refugees and allow delivery of humanitarian aid, the fledgeling Free Syrian Army could use such an area as its own safe haven
It's a move that would be welcomed by Syrian refugees in Turkey
(SOUNDBITE) (English) SYRIAN REFUGEE MOHAMMAD AMR, SAYING:
"This is very good. We want this, this is very good."
Turkish officials have not spelled out in any detail how they would create such a 'security zone.'
