Description
(ROUGH CUT ONLY - NO REPORTER NARRATION)
A protest against the reopening of a rubbish dump on the Tunisian tourist island of Djerba escalated into clashes on Saturday (October 6) leaving 49 police and two demonstrators injured, according to the interior ministry.
The protesters hurled rocks and firebombs at the police and set alight a number of police cars before being dispersed by tear gas, the ministry said.
The protest was triggered when authorities in Guellala reversed a decision to permanently close the unofficial dump, local media reported.
