Former President Donald Trump skipped the first GOP debate on August 24th, opting for a pre-taped interview with Tucker Carlson on his social media platform X. In the interview, Trump explained that he did not want to participate in the debate because he was far ahead in the polls. Trump criticized Ron DeSantis and Mike Pence in the interview. He said DeSantis is "done" and continued insisting Pence had the power to overturn the election, which Pence and experts deny. Trump is expected to turn himself into a jail in Georgia after being indicted on charges related to election interference.
