Tripoli prepares for 'liberation'
Description
Not so long ago, this was Tripoli's Green Square, named after Muammar Gaddafi's infamous Green Book.
Today, it is Libya's Martyrs' Square - where thousands were expected to later celebrate the country's official 'liberation' after a bitter eight month civil war.
Libya's interim leaders were to make the announcement in Benghazi
SOUNDBITE)(Arabic) LIBYAN MAN, ALI SHHER, SAYING:
"Thank God this is a feast. It is a celebration. We removed the bacteria and today we are cleaning the square. And thank God."
(SOUNDBITE)(Arabic) LIBYAN MAN, ZIYAD MARWAN, SAYING:
"We had a huge celebration when Libyan became independent in 1951. Today Libya is declaring independence again in 2011. Thank God we are done with him after 42 years and we have freedom again, thank God."
Disputes within the interim government have several times delayed the announcement of the end of the war.
Interim prime minister Mahmoud Jibril, who announced he was stepping down on Saturday, said Libya's new leaders had a 'very limited opportunity' to put aside their differences.
