How to Trim Maple Trees
When should maple trees be pruned, prune an overgrown maple tree, Can maple trees be pruned in the fall, cut the top off a maple tree
Trimming maple trees is much like pruning any other deciduous tree. The main difference is that you should prune these trees in the summer rather than winter so that they do not lose as much sap. With younger trees cut off branches to shape the tree. For older trees you should mainly trim them to remove dead weak or crossing branches. Prune maples in mid to late summer. Though most trees should be pruned while in their dormant state maple trees are the exception. They leak sap when pruned especially if you do it early in spring. Prune later in the summer to lessen the flow of sap.
Work on younger trees every other year beginning in year 3. Start trimming younger trees in their third summer. You can apply structural pruning every other year up until the tree is about 10. Then you will need to reduce pruning to just dead and weak branches for the most part.
Trim the tree every 5 years after year 10. Once your tree matures it will not need nearly as much pruning. When pruning older trees do not try to change the shape. Instead focus on any thinning that needs to be done as well as removing the dead branches.
Prune young or old trees any year you see dead branches. While you want to space out your pruning most years if you see dead branches make sure to trim the branches that year. You still want to trim at the same time of year in the summer but you do not have to wait until it is a pruning year. The best time to prune your maple trees is in the late winter or early spring — ideally, you should try to get them pruned before they bloom in the spring
Start by pruning back branches that point to the inside of the tree, grow straight up or currently rub against other branches
Maple can be pruned in fall or winter, and even into early spring before the leaves break bud
"Topping" a tree is more like decapitation than a cosmetic procedure, causing serious pruning wounds and destroying the maple's natural shape
