Tracey Hardie - Why Lord, Why a Child

A beautiful day darkened by a black cloud coming down,
the smile on a child's face frozen to a frown.
Eyes that had life stared with stricken fear,
I saw his lips tremble followed by streams of tears.

The driver watched shocked in his drunken state,
for the child in my arms met the path of his fate.
His frail body covered in blood, tangled and broken;
'help me I don't want to die, ' his words softly spoken.

I closed my burning eyes gazing up to the sky,
thoughts raged racing in my mind 'why lord, why? '
I looked into those tiny eyes that sang of cheer and song;
gently stroking his face, I knew he would soon be gone.

'I want my mommy' he cried from his battered frame;
my heart was broken, tears I tried to refrain.
He died in my arms without his mother by his side,
emotions that I held in, I could no longer hide.

A heart rendering cry escaped and shook the air,
my eyes met the drunkards and I could only stare.
Would he say 'I am sorry, ' would he even dare!
Would he remember this day, did he even care!
