The French government has denied that failures by its intelligence services allowed the killings to be carried out by a lone gunman with known extremist views.
Mohammed Merah, a French citizen of Algerian origin, was shot dead in a police raid on Thursday, but how he was able to access weapons and and launch three attacks has raised many questions.
