In a huge embarrassment to the BJP – the Tamil Nadu BJP state president has now admitted that the delay by the centre in setting a scheme to implement the Supreme Court judgement in the Cauvery row was due to the Karnataka elections. The BJP state president Tamilisai Soundrarajan went on to say that all political parties indulge in such politics from time to time. Having no qualms in accepting this she said that ‘the BJP will release Cauvery water, once it comes to power’. The centre had earlier informed the Supreme Court that ‘Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other central ministers were busy campaigning for the Karnataka assembly elections’.
In a big relief for the elderly who get abandoned by their children, the Narendra Modi government is now planning to increase the jail term for those who abandon or abuse their elderly, to six months from the existing three months. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has also proposed widening the definition of children to include adopted, step children, son-in-law and Daughter-in-laws. The draft act has also proposed doing away with an Upperlimit of Rs 10,000 per months as maintenance amount, making it variable as people who are earning more can spend more. The elderly can also approach a maintenance tribunal on case their children refuse to maintain them.
