Tonsils Explained: Why We Have Them and What They Really Do.
Tonsils are two small, oval-shaped masses of lymphoid tissue located at the back of your throat. Think of them as your body’s first line of defense. Their primary purpose is to act as "gatekeepers" for the immune system. Positioned right where you breathe and swallow, they "sample" incoming bacteria and viruses to help your body recognize and fight off infections before they spread further.

They are packed with white blood cells that produce antibodies to kill germs. While they are most active during childhood, they naturally shrink as we age and our immune system becomes more experienced. Sometimes, these "guards" get overwhelmed and become infected themselves—a condition known as tonsillitis.
