The mantelpiece clock
ticks the moments
impassively away
between the serving times
of lunch and supper
under the TV eye
which, unwatched,
never sleeps
mouthing nothings
to the overheated room

life wanes
senses dim and fade

now is the hour
when love is needed

and I have come
so late
