Three dead in Swiss shooting

The sleepy Swiss village of Daillon.

It was here on late Wednesday that a gunman opened fire, killing three women and wounding two more men.

Each of the three women was shot at least twice, in the head and in the chest.

The 33-year-old gunman who has not been name by police, threatened officers and was shot in the chest during his arrest and then taken to hospital.

Police say he was a local man who had been in psychaitric care and had a conviction for marijuana use.

He used at least two weapons including a rifle when he began firing at villagers from his apartment and then moved outside.

It appears he was not supposed to have any guns - his weapons having being seized in 2005.

Local media also reported the gunman had been drinking heavily and carried an assault rifle.

Gun ownership is widespread in Switzerland, with voters voting against gun control reforms in a 2011 referendum.
