Three dead in New Mexico freight train derailment

Three workers were killed on Saturday afternoon (November 30) after a freight train derailed near Silver City in New Mexico.

The freight train, which was operated by Southwestern Railroad, was hauling eight cars carrying iron when it derailed sometime around noon about three miles outside of Bayard near N.M. 356, about 75 miles northwest of Las Cruces.

The locomotive went off the tracks and down a 40- to 50-foot (12- to 15-metre) ravine, killing all three men on board.

Investigators are looking into the cause of the accident.
