Description

Thousands gathered in the streets of Bangkok to protest the passage of a draft bill that could allow the return of polarising former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Members and supporters of Thailand's opposition Democrat party held signs and shouted slogans as they passed through the city centre.

The group says the bill is an attempt by the ruling Puea Party and current Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Thaksin's sister, to cover up Thaksin's crimes that led to his ouster in 2006.

Thaksin has been living abroad since 2008 to escape corruption charges.

The bill now moves to the upper house where it will be debated before another vote.
