Le dieu Odin a fort à faire avec Thor, son fils arrogant et inconséquent. Guerrier tout-puissant, celui-ci a commis des actes téméraires qui ont font renaître un conflit ancestral. Excédé, son père décide de le bannir du royaume mythique d'Asgard et l'envoie sur Terre, à vivre parmi les humains. Il y rencontre la jolie Jane Foster dont il ne tarde pas à tomber amoureux. Lorsque les forces du Mal d’Asgard s'apprêtent à envahir la Terre, Thor découvre enfin ce que signifie "être un héros".
