Ukrainian Air Defenses Hold Strong
Despite the scale of the attack, Ukrainian air defenses proved resilient. Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk reported that Ukrainian forces successfully intercepted two missiles and an impressive 60 Shahed drones. The assault involved a complex array of weaponry, including three X-59/69 guided missiles launched from Russian territory near Kursk and Belgorod, as well as two additional unidentified missiles.
74 Shahed Drones Launched from Russian Territories
Adding to the intensity, 74 Shahed-131/136 drones were launched from areas near Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Kursk, and Yeysk. Ukrainian forces, including anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare systems, and mobile fire groups, worked tirelessly to repel the assault. However, 14 drones managed to evade interception, crashing in various locations across Ukraine.
Kyiv Under Fire: A City on High Alert
Around 2 a.m., Shahed drones were detected over Kyiv, sending the city into high alert. Fortunately, the air defense forces neutralized the threat, preventing any strikes on residential areas. However, debris from the drones caused minor fires and damage in several districts, including Holosiivsky and Desnyansky.
Dnipropetrovsk and Cherkasy Regions Also Targeted
In the Dnipropetrovsk region, air defenses shot down five drones targeting Nikopol. Miraculously, no casualties were reported. Meanwhile, in Cherkasy, debris from intercepted drones sparked a fire at a private enterprise, though no injuries occurred. Eight Shahed drones were intercepted in the region, adding to the overall success of Ukraine's defensive efforts.
A Week of Relentless Attacks
This latest assault marks the fourth consecutive overnight attack since Monday, August 26, when Russian missile and drone strikes ravaged Ukraine’s power grid with 127 missiles and 109 drones. That earlier wave of attacks resulted in at least four deaths and forced authorities to introduce emergency blackouts across the nation.
