Description

The Western Wall or Kotel in Hebrew, is located in the Old City of Jerusalem at the foot of the western side of the Temple Mount. It is a remnant of the ancient wall that surrounded the Jewish Temple's courtyard and is one of the most sacred sites in Judaism outside of the Temple Mount itself. It is a site for Jewish prayer and pilgrimage.
Jewish tradition teaches that the Temple Mount is the focal point of Creation. In the center of the mountain lies the Foundation Stone of the world. Here Adam came into being. Here Abraham, Isaac and Jacob served God.
Jerusalem was chosen by God as the dwelling place of the Shechinah.
King David longed to build the temple, and Solomon, his son built the first temple here 3000 years ago. It was destroyed by Babylonians in 586 BCE. The second temple was rebuilt on its ruins seventy years later. But it was rased again by the Roman legions.
