The Terror (1963) – Roger Corman Gothic Horror

The Terror (1963) is an American independent Gothic horror film produced and directed by Roger Corman, starring Boris Karloff, Jack Nicholson, and Sandra Knight. Although credited to Corman, the film became infamous for its chaotic production, ultimately involving five directors — including a young Francis Ford Coppola, Monte Hellman, Jack Hill, and even Nicholson himself.

The story follows Lt. André Duvalier, a French officer in 1806 who encounters a mysterious woman named Helene, identical to the long‑dead wife of Baron von Leppe. As Duvalier investigates, he becomes entangled in a web of witchcraft, hauntings, and deception involving the Baron’s tragic past. The film was shot largely on leftover sets from Corman’s The Raven, with all of Karloff’s scenes completed in just two days — while the rest of the film took months to finish.
