The story follows the adventures of three siblings—Roberta (Bobbie), Peter, and Phyllis—who move with their mother from London to a rural cottage called Three Chimneys in Yorkshire after their father is falsely imprisoned on suspicion of being a spy. The children find joy and excitement in their new surroundings, particularly by the nearby railway, where they wave to passing trains and befriend the station porter, Albert Perks, and an elderly gentleman who regularly travels on the train.
As they adapt to their new life, the children engage in various adventures, including warning a train of a landslide using their red petticoats, which earns them the title of "The Railway Children." They also help an exiled Russian writer and work to uncover the truth about their father's situation, ultimately leading to his release and reunion with the family.
