Fuyant un passé douloureux, Sarah emménage avec son fils Chris au milieu des bois. Au cours d'une balade, après l'avoir perdu de vue, elle retrouve Chris au bord d'un énorme gouffre dont elle ignorait l'existence. Troublée par cette découverte, Sarah voit dès lors son quotidien vaciller : son enfant adopte un comportement étrange, tantôt lunaire, tantôt menaçant. Elle ne le reconnait plus. Sarah est alors prise d’un doute tétanisant : est-ce bien son fils qu’elle a retrouvé, ce jour-là après leur balade ?
