The Common Leopard Project

WWF–Pakistan has collaborated with the Human Welfare and Nature Conservation Society (HWNCS) to promote research and conservation of the common leopard. The project focuses on common leopards in Ayubia National Park. The funding will promote research in collaboration with the University of Siena, Italy and will develop media products with the Walkabout Films (Pvt) Limited. The media products such as documentaries is intended to help in enhancing understanding amongst the people who live and share the habitat and resources with the animals.

Common leopard is an endangered species which is largely threatened because of conflict with communities and illegal trade for its pelt and other parts. The project therefore involves awareness and developing understanding about the species through research and media products. Recent incidents of leopard attacks on humans and understanding the behavior of leopards can help in protecting both people and animals. The research will explore the movement pattern of leopard through satellite collars, diet analysis and integrate genetics study and camera trapping to determine the population of leopards. To ensure that first common leopard has been collared recently.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Wildlife Department is a key partner and is providing field support towards this initiative.

The Common Leopard Project that Walkabout Films documented in partnership with WWF-Pakistan has been completed. The groundbreaking project covers the issues surrounding the Common Leopard and the area, with special emphasis to the Ayubia National Park. (By-Walkabout films)
