Mystery writer Cornelia Van Gorder has rented a country house called "The Oaks", which not long ago was the scene of some murders committed by a strange and violent criminal known as "The Bat". Meanwhile, the house's owner, bank president John Fleming, has recently embezzled one million dollars in securities and has hidden the proceeds in the house, but is killed before he can retrieve it.

Kurz nachdem Krimiautorin Cornelia Van Gorder das Landhaus von Bankdirektor Fleming gemietet hat, stellt sich heraus, dass dort vor nicht allzu langer Zeit ein als Fledermaus maskierter Verbrecher mehrere Morde verübte. Fleming selbst gesteht bei einem Jagdausflug seinem Arzt Dr. Wells, eine Million Dollar in Wertpapieren von seiner Bank unterschlagen und im Landhaus versteckt zu haben. Wells erschießt Fleming und tarnt die Tat als Unfall. Als die Unterschlagung bekannt wird, gerät Hauptkassierer Bailey unter Verdacht und wird verhaftet. Es kommt zur Jagd auf die im Haus versteckten Wertpapiere, an der auch der Fledermaus-Mörder teilnimmt.
