"The Avengers" breaks a record, Lohan off the hook
Description
Hollywood's summer movie season got off with a bang. "The Avengers" proved that five superheroes are better than one by bursting into the record books with a massive 200.3 million dollars in ticket sales over its opening weekend in North American theaters - that's light years ahead of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows - Part 2," which opened last year with 169.2 million. All in all, "The Avengers" has collected more than 641 million since it opened in international markets on April 25.
As for the rest of the weekend box office, romantic comedy "Think Like a Man," slipped to second place with 8 million.
And "Hunger Games" came in at number three with 5.7 million dollars.
Good news for Lindsay Lohan - she will not face prosecution over an alleged hit and run. Police had asked Los Angeles prosecutors to review whether Lohan should be charged with leaving the scene of an accident, but they determined there was insufficient evidence to pursue a case.
Finally, "Neighborhood Watch," the film starring Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn as suburban neighborhood watch volunteers, has been re-named just "The Watch." People had complained that the movie and its previously released trailer were insensitive in the light of the shooting of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin. Fox released a statement saying the name was changed to avoid any "accidental or unintended misimpression."
