Researchers report a vast underground complex in Russia’s North Caucasus whose scale and precision could reshape assessments of early engineering. The Khara-Hora Shaft features a near-cylindrical drop about 130 feet deep opening into chambers supported by interlocking stone slabs. Ongoing exploration of this underground complex and prehistoric engineering site has mapped more than 330 feet of labyrinthine passages with constant airflow suggesting an intentional ventilation system. Walls of tightly fitted stone blocks, some estimated at 200 tons with machine-like tool marks, fuel debate over artificial versus natural formation. Access is hazardous, and less than 25% has been surveyed, with plans for radar, thermal imaging, and robotic drones.
