Description

Things turned chaotic during the Mayana Kollai festival in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore after a 60-foot temple chariot, part of a religious procession, toppled onto devotees.

At least seven people were injured in the incident and taken to the Government Medical College Hospital in Adukkamparai for treatment.

The tradition involves devotees pulling the chariot, carrying a decorated deity, towards the Palar River. In this case, the chariot lost balance while being pulled from the riverbed onto the road after the ritual procession.

Officials including the District Collector and Superintendent of Police inspected the site and ordered an inquiry.

Government regulations cap the height of temple chariots at 12 feet, but this rule was flouted in this incident.
