Dès le VIe siècle de notre ère, Tara est vue comme la Shakti, la parèdre, l’épouse d’Avalokitésvara. Elle naquit d’un beau lotus qui flottait dans l’une de ses larmes afin de lui apporter son aide. A ce titre, elle est le bodhisattva féminin de la compassion.
