Taking cover in Ukraine

There's nothing left as their house smolders after days of shelling near Donetsk.

Now they're seeking shelter in the frigid walls of this cellar - turned bomb shelter.

They ran for their lives.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) DONETSK RESIDENT GALINA, SAYING:

"I just ran home and then this loud explosion came and I ran back here, I didn't even have time to change, nothing."

This latest round of shelling comes as Ukrainian troops prepare for a final push on the rebel-held Donetsk.

And they're confident about their offensive.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) NIKOLAI, UKRAINIAN PARATROOPER, SAYING:

"Guys are sure we will win, we will get rid of those who disturb civilians, so to say. Even citizens are happy that the Ukrainian army is coming."

Kiev has been tightening its grip after separatist fighters began launching counters attacks at the army.
