Ran toward enemy fire
Dragging Marines to safety
Many wounds, arms, legs, face
Mortar round blew off a hand
Again he ran, this time
To a Corpsman on the ground,
Heavy machine gun rounds
Cut him down

Major Watters
Chaplain,173rd Airborne Brigade
After the perimeter was pulled back
Three times he stepped over the wire
Through friendly and unfriendly fire
Brought solders back, on his back
Fell while aiding the wounded

There’s a long, low wall in Washington
Many named there
Passed to the next life
While holding the hands of these
When you go, passing slowly
Whisper low and softly
Thank you
