Syrian rebels enter Aleppo: What is known so far

The biggest rebel push in five years has erupted in Syria, with insurgents led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham advancing into Aleppo.

Over 550 square kilometers and 70 settlements in Aleppo and Idlib have reportedly fallen under rebel control, according to Turkey's Anadolu Agency.

Syrian forces claim to have inflicted heavy losses, while Russian and Syrian airstrikes target rebel positions near the Turkish border. The U.N. has confirmed 27 civilian deaths, including eight children, as violence intensifies.

Aleppo, a symbol of Syria’s civil war, is again at the forefront of the conflict. The Kremlin denounced the offensive, calling it a breach of sovereignty.
