Syria's divisions as deep as ever

As President Assad's opponents vow to continue their fight, his followers have been staging a defiant show of support. In several Assad strongholds thousands took part in what some say were orchestrated rallies.

The pro and anti-Assad protests reflect the deep divisons within the country, between the majority Sunnis on one side and the Alawites and other groups, who still back him.
