Suu Kyi urges peace

Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi gets back to business in Myanmar.

Suu Kyi returned home after her first European trip since being released from 15 years under house arrest.

She took the opportunity to call for peace after sectarian violence hit north west Myanmar last month.

SOUNDBITE: AUNG SAN SUU KYI, MYANMAR OPPOSITION LEADER SAYING (English):

In the end, of course, the peace process must be carried on by the people of Burma themselves. I understand that the government has been carrying on the ceasefire negotiation in the north. We all hope that this will lead to political negotiation and a settlement that will bring permanent peace to the country."

Myanmar's fledgling parliament reconvenes this week, with the ambitious task of reshaping the economy.

Suu Kyi was scheduled to attend the first session on Wednesday, but has postponed citing exhaustion.

She says her party has already planned motions for discussion.

"Regarding the work that we have to do, since now I will be part of the National Assembly, we'll be involved in the legislative process. Our party has already prepared some motions to be tabled and this will be done in due course."

As the country undergoes unprecedented reform, doubts remain over which sensitive laws will be pushed through parliament.
