Survival takes priority for many Senegalese

Opposition groups in Senegal are calling for a day of remembrance to honour those killed in political violence this week.

The call comes after protesters took to the streets of the capital, Dakar, to object to a court ruling allowing President Abdoulaye Wade, 85, to stand for a third term in office.

But many Senegalese, such as those working as fisherman and farmers, are less concerned about the presidential election later this month than they are about the encroaching threats to their only means of survival.
