Description
Super Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful storms ever recorded, devastated Philippines last Friday, taking the lives of an estimated 10,000 residents of just one city, Tacloban, the capital of Leyte province in central Philippines.
Tacloban had 200,000 residents, but now there are corpses scattered around of people who either drowned or were killed by collapsing buildings. As many as 10,000 people are feared dead in just this one city, according to authorities.
As survivors faced a shortage of supplies and city officials were struggling to distribute aid, looting was widespread.
Although Tacloban's airport was seriously damaged, helicopters and military aircraft were still using it to evacuate people.
Both the US and Australia have launched rescue efforts.
Super Typhoon Haiyan slammed into six central Philippine islands last Friday, lashing them with gusts of wind at up to 235 kilometers per hour and affecting about 4 million people.
Three wind chasers traveled from Hong Kong to Tacloban and witnessed the strong winds. While the hotel they stayed at was flooded, they helped rescuers carry a guest with disabilities to the second floor. They described the storm as like a disaster film scene.
A weakened Typhoon Haiyan slammed into northern Vietnam after devastating the Philippines, killing at least six people.
