A U.S. team says it has discovered the S.S. Terra Nova, a polar exploration ship that sunk off the coast of Greenland in September of 1943 after carrying Captain Robert Scott to the South Pole.

The Schmidt Ocean Institute said its survey team, that included researchers from the University of New Hampshire, Ifremer and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, found the whaler as it tested its echo sounders off the southern coast of Greenland.

The S.S. Terra Nova famously carried a British exploration team led by Robert Falcon Scott to the South Pole in 1910. The men successfully reached the South Pole but all five froze to death during their walk over the Ross Ice Shelf.

The next year, the S.S. Terra Nova sank after hitting an iceberg while carrying supplies during World War II.
